High Line at the Rail Yards

Produced by Arbuckle Industries for Friends of the High Line, this video shows the existing conditions at the third and final section of the High Line at the Rail Yards, which is currently overgrown with self-seeded wildflowers and grasses that grew up between the tracks when the trains stopped running on the elevated railway in the 1980s.

Since the organization was founded in 1999, Friends of the High Line has been working to open this final section of the elevated railway as public open space. On Thursday, September 20, 2012, Friends of the High Line joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn for a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the beginning of construction.

Before the work officially begins, Friends of the High Line is opening the gates for visitors to explore the rail yards section during the first two weekends in October of 2012. Presented by Uniqlo as part of the 10th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend, the self-guided walking tours during Rail Yards Weekends will be the public’s last chance to walk along the High Line at the Rail Yards before it is transformed into an extension of the High Line park
