Billboard next to the High Line at West 18th Street
High Line Art, presented by Friends of the High Line, is pleased to announce that David Shrigley will present a new commission for the 25-by-75 foot billboard next to the High Line at West 18th Street and 10th Avenue. This is the third work to be presented as part of HIGH LINE BILLBOARD, a series of art installations made possible thanks to the generous support of Edison Properties, the owner of the property on which the billboard stands. This billboard follows Anne Collier’s Developing Tray #2 and John Baldessari’s The First $100,000 I Ever Made, which inaugurated the series in December, 2011. Shrigley’s new work will be on view from Thursday, April 5 through Monday, May 7, 2012.
David Shrigley is known for his distinct breed of humorous drawings that are often crude, wry observations of daily life. His work takes a variety of forms besides drawings, including sculptures, animations, and books. By combining a stylistically simple, almost childish technique with dark contents and a unique deadpan approach, Shrigley provides a whimsical commentary on life and death. For HIGH LINE BILLBOARD Shrigley will present an iconic work which will stand as a reminder of our fears, insecurities, and paranoia, which are so familiar to our contemporary society.

I look forward to seeing David’s work transformed into a gigantic billboard for New York City. It will be a daily reminder that we can overcome our worries with humor.”
About the Artist
David Shrigley lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland, and recently had his first major UK retrospective at the Hayward Gallery, London. He has exhibited internationally including solo exhibitions at the Turku Art Museum, FI; Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow, UK; M Museum, Leuven, BE; Kunstmuseum, Luzern, CH; BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the CCS Museum at Bard College, Annendale-on-Hudson, NY, among others. Shrigley has participated in group exhibitions at international venues such as Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Serpentine Gallery, London; Tate Modern, London and many others.
