Join us as we celebrate the Summer Solstice with the premiere of The Gauntlet: The High Line!

Immerse yourself in the sonic duel performed by a choir of hocketing singers. Walk through The Gauntlet and hear musical phrases bounce between pairs of singers lined up along the Sundeck. Composed by Sxip Shirey and theater artist Karmenlara Ely, the text and music are inspired by a week spent on the High Line, listening to passersby, distilling the essence of the sounds of the High Line and New York City.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Sxip Shirey is a composer/producer/performer based in New York City. He most recently toured with the theater/circus arts production “LIMBO”, performing in 425 shows in 2 years across 3 continents. Shirey is a 2011 United States Artist Fellow, and teaches at the Norwegian Theater Academy in Fredrikstad, Norway. He has been a featured performer at TED, and wrote the music for the short film “Statuesque” written and directed by Neil Gaiman and starring Bill Nighy.

Karmenlara Ely is Artistic Director of Acting at Østfold University College/Norwegian Theatre Academy in Fredrikstad, Norway. She collaborates as a performer, creator, dramaturg and scenographer on theater, festival and performance works in New York, Europe and the Caribbean. She is co-editor of the recent books Infinite Record: Archive Memory Performance and Responsive Listening: Theater Training for Contemporary Spaces both released in collaboration with Brooklyn Arts Press.

The Gauntlet: The High Line is presented in partnership with Make Music New York

This year Make Music New York celebrates its 10th anniversary with hundreds of concerts throughout the 5 boroughs, from dawn to sunset. There will be performances ranging from world renowned artists in some of the city’s most central locations to all-kids rock bands jamming on their block. June 21st will be a feast for the senses with a wide range of Special Projects and Mass Appeal events to go along with the huge array of New Yorkers sharing their music in public, all for free!
