The New York Times architecture review is in, and calling the piece -- by architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff -- a rave would be no exaggeration. Ouroussoff describes his walk on the High Line as a linear narrative made of a series of episodes, with the careful balance of landscape elements serving to tie the design together:

Our neighbor the Standard Hotel landed a nice New York Times review by Nicolai Ouroussoff yesterday. Ouroussoff points to the Standard's architects, Polshek Partnership,  as an example of a trend toward more "serious" firms looking for "the right balance between innovation and restraint."

Hugh Pearman, London-based design critic and author of several fantastic architecture books, was recently in town reviewing another NYC project, and decided to stop by to check out the progress on the High Line.

The MTA announced today that it has selected Tishman Speyer as the developer for the West Side Rail Yards. This announcement ends a 6-month bidding process, which originally involved 5 competing developers. Tishman Speyer outbid the only other remaining contender-- a joint venture between the Durst Organization and Vornado Realty Trust-- by $112 million, offering to pay $1.004 billion for the rights to develop the 26-acre site.

 
Crain's came out with their annual 40 Under 40 list  yesterday, and the High Line's own Robert Hammond made the cut.

Boston may own New York in baseball, but in regards to creative re-development of disused behemoths of the mid-20th century, they may be woefully behind Gotham. Consider Sunday's Times article describing the slow evolution of the park being built atop the Big Dig where Boston's old Southeast Expressway used to run.
