JOEL STERNFELD, "RAILROAD ARTIFACT"

Photographer Joel Sternfeld was recruited in 2001 by Friends of the High Line to capture four seasons of the wild, self-seeded landscape that grew up after the trains stopped running. His iconic photo "Railroad Artifact" turns its gaze down a section of the High Line at the rail yards that runs along 30th Street, the Empire State Building visible in the distance. Joel’s photos inspired New Yorkers to rally together to save the High Line at a time when it was under threat of demolition.
