Photo of the Week: The Spur at the Rail Yards
It is an exciting moment in the construction timeline for the High Line at the Rail Yards. The first phase of the rail yards is taking shape and this upcoming Monday, November 11, designs will be unveiled for the Spur, pictured above, a section of the High Line at the Rail Yards that extends over 10th Avenue at West 30th Street.
For this week’s Photo of the Week we’re featuring two of our recent favorites of the Spur from photographer Timothy Schenck who has been expertly documenting the progress of construction at the High Line since before our first section was underway in the spring of 2006.

Timothy’s first calling was as an engineer, which might explain his knack for beautifully composed and almost mathematically balanced photos of both architectural and non-architectural subjects. He first picked up photography as a hobby in 2005, and was introduced shortly thereafter to the High Line by a colleague who thought the development at the site might strike his interest. Soon this one time visit became an on-going project. “I fell in love with the [High Line] on that first walk and decided to try to make regular visits to photograph the transformation in the early mornings before heading off to work – [it was] my first long-term photography project!” Timothy recalls.
Soon Timothy connected with Friends of the High Line staff and began documenting Section 1 construction progress on a more official level. Timothy’s amazing work on Flickr caught the eye of Nikon and in the summer of 2006 they approached him about a special campaign. It was a turning point in his professional life and he began to think more seriously about pursuing photography full-time.
Timothy would continue on working as an engineer for several more years, but more recently, near the time that construction at the High Line at the Rail Yards kicked off, Timothy decided to dedicate himself fully to photography. “I'm now living my dream!” Timothy says. “On a given week, you might find me up on High Line, out on Governor’s Island, down in the pit at World Trade Center One, or up on the spires of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, capturing history as it unfolds. I'll always have a special place in my heart for this park and its people, and I owe them a debt of gratitude for all the encouragement and inspiration they have provided me.”
If Timothy’s photos have piqued your interest in the High Line at the Rail Yards, join us on Monday, November 11, for a sneak peek at the latest designs for the Spur. A public presentation by the High Line’s Design Team of James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro will feature never-before-seen renderings for the Spur and a construction update by Co-Founder Robert Hammond.
