A Year in Pictures
It's been a year! One year ago today, the first section of the High Line opened to the public. The High Line's first year as a public park has been extraordinary, with more than two million visitors from New York and around the world coming to see and experience the park. To reflect upon our first year, we wanted to share with you our favorite photographs.

Celebration Tonight
Please join us tonight for a special talk and reception in the Chelsea Market Passage on the High Line. Peter Mullan, our Vice President of Planning & Design, will present and discuss plans for Section 2. Immediately following Peter's talk, we will host a reception with Appalachian stringband music by Stephanie Coleman, Eamon O'Leary, and Cleek Schrey, and refreshments available from People's Pops. Festivities begin at 6:30 PM. Visit our Events Calendar to learn more.

Rail Yards ULURP Vote
Our first anniversary is enough cause to celebrate, but today also brings good news on our effort to preserve the High Line at the West Side Rail Yards. We are pleased to announce that the City Planning Commission led by Chair Amanda Burden today voted to approve the City's application to allow it to acquire the High Line at the rail yards.

While there is still much to be done to guarantee the High Line's future at the rail yards, creating the option for the City to acquire this section is a major, positive step toward our ultimate goal: full preservation of the High Line north of 30th Street, including the 10th Avenue Spur, and completion of the High Line all the way to 34th Street.

Today's vote paves the way for the final vote at the City Council. We would like to thank Mayor Michael Bloomberg, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, City Planning Chair Amanda Burden and our supporters who have joined us in advocating for the High Line at the rail yards, including Congressman Jerold Nadler, State Senator Tom Duane, Assembly Member Richard Gottfried, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, and Community Board 4. We look forward to seeing everyone at the City Council in the coming weeks to advocate for the full preservation of this iconic part of New York's industrial history.

Friends of the High Line is grateful to The New York Community Trust — LuEsther T. Mertz Advised Fund and the Greenacre Foundation for their dedicated support to our rail yards advocacy and public programming this year.

Lab School Chorus Braves the Cold to Bring the Cheer

Last night, students from Chelsea's NYC Lab School Chorus braved the bitter temperature and biting wind for a holiday concert in the High Line's Chelsea Market passage. The kids gamely ran through their repertoire, from seasonal selections like "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" to Broadway favorites like "Seasons of Love", from Rent. Special kudos go to their keyboardist, whose gloveless fingers were looking pretty blue by the end of the set!

To keep the crowd warm, Tom Colicchio's Craft Sweets brought their creamy hot cocoa and the most addictive gingerbread ever. Thanks to both Craft and the NYC Lab school for bringing holiday cheer to the High Line!

Come view the night sky using the AAA's high-powered telescopes, and get a lesson from the experts on the celestial wonders of the fall night sky.

The program takes place south of the Standard, near the Gansevoort entrance. Come gawk at the moon and Jupiter among other celestial attractions. Telescopes will be set up from dusk to 9:30 PM. Design Launch Party Recap
August 06, 2008 | Author: meredithatthehi... | Categories: , , , ,

I hope you were able to join us last Wednesday under the High Line as we celebrated the release of Designing the High Line, our new design publication showcasing High Line designs from Gansevoort-30th Street.  With some help from a lighting designer and Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra, we transformed a construction staging area into an amazing party venue.  Check out photos by our fabulous volunteer, Jeffrey Donenfeld.  At Friends of the High Line, we concentrate a lot on what the space on top of the High Line will look like, but this event got me excited about how great the area underneath the Line can be!

Over 700 guests mingled under the Line while enjoying tasty treats from the Cleaver Co. and sipping Brooklyn Brewery beer.  Thanks to everyone who showed up to toast our design and construction teams, and a special thanks to the evening's sponsors, Related, Cardinal Investments, 511 West 25th Street, SHoP Architets, and Alf Naman for the use of the space under the Line.  If you didn't get to pick up a copy of Designing the High Line, it's available on Amazon.com.

High Liners Paddle the Bronx River!
June 17, 2008 | Author: Danya Sherman | Categories: , , ,

Paddlers enjoy a history lesson about Concrete
Plant Park, opening to the public in September

On Saturday, 60 High Line supporters ventured up to Hunt's Point in the South Bronx for a tour of the Bronx River--by canoe. Staff from the Bronx River Alliance guided us down the river past a dynamic combination of still-functioning industry, new parkland, and a host of wildlife (crabs, egrets, mussels, you name it). We started off at Hunts Point Riverside Park, which is part of the new greenway project spearheaded by the Sustainable South Bronx. The project seeks to create a network of walking and biking paths, new parks, and water recreation, ensuring that residents of the South Bronx get their fair share of green space and access to the waterfront.

Members of Friends of the High Line receive a discount and hear about our public programs first--to become a member, click here.

If you missed the tour this weekend, never fear--the Bronx River Alliance holds public tours all summer long. Click here to see a schedule of upcoming events [PDF].

Relatedly, The Floating Pool Lady will offer an alternative to Hunts Pointers to swimming in the Bronx River for the next three summers.

More photos after the jump.

High Line Horticulture Tours Were Hot, Hot, Hot
June 09, 2008 | Author: meredithatthehi... | Categories: , , ,

horticulture

Despite the heat wave this weekend, 80 intrepid High Line supporters took part in our first ever High Line horticulture tours on Saturday. Alex Feleppa, director of horticulture for the Horticultural Society of New York, took visitors on a journey through the rail yards section of the Line (30th-34th Streets), the only part of the Line not yet under construction. Alex highlighted native and invasive species, plants' adaptation to tough conditions like those on the High Line, and the way seeds spread and germinate.

These tours were part of our regular spring/summer programming calendar. To hear about upcoming programs, join our mailing list, or better yet, become a member of Friends of the High Line. Members get advance notice of programming events.
