Team Statement

Internationally renowned Steven Holl Architects joins with the prominent landscape architecture firm Hargreaves Associates and engineering firm HNTB to propose a plan for the High Line that is both forward thinking and ecologically sensitive.

Steven Holl's work on the High Line began over twenty years ago with his visionary study of the elevated rail, Bridge of Houses, published in 1981. Today, with his firm's offices overlooking the unique strip of green, this deep appreciation of the High Line guides and inspires the team's design approach.

Steven Holl Architects' excellence in urban design is exemplified by the Helsinki Master Plan and Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, the revitalization of the Beirut Central Marina District and the new Higgins Hall on Pratt's Brooklyn campus. Hargreaves Associates' award winning projects include the World Trade Center Site Competition, the "Sydney Olympics 2000" and Crissy Field in San Francisco. HNTB Corporation is a nationally recognized leader in all aspects of infrastructure design and rehabilitation. HNTB's bridge designs include some of the most innovative projects in the U.S. such as Boston's Leonard B. Zakim Cable Stayed Bridge, the Roosevelt Lake arch Bridge, and the Second Tacoma Narrows Suspension Bridge. Their extensive local experience with infrastructure rehabilitation for NYC DOT, the Port Authority of NY and NJ, and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority will ensure that the High Line will be cost-effectively rehabilitated with minimal disruption to traffic and the surrounding communities.

The team said "We see the High Line as a suspended green valley in the Manhattan Alps. This steel calligraphy can become a place of quiet and reflection. We have adopted an evolutionary strategy rather than a conventional master plan. Our approach will allow an organic development of the High Line as a public place in a way that maintains its unique phenomenological experience, beginning with the opening of the first section as soon as possible and working towards a future where the High Line will be an ecological street flanked by new West Chelsea developments, urban spaces, and activities."

Public arts consultants Martin and Mildred Friedman's temporary events list includes artists such as Vito Acconci, Shimon Attie, Lothar Baumgarten, Janet Cardiff, Matts Liederstam, and Nancy Rubins.

Other team members include Guy Nordenson and Associates, the Bioengineering Group, Catherine Seavitt Studio, artist Solange Fabiao, AKRF, Ove Arup & Partners, Renfro Design Group, ETM Associates, Weisz and Yoes Associates, Schall & Russo LLC, Davis Langdon Adamson, Munoz Engineering and Metropolis NYC.
