Rail Yards Weekends: Walking Tours of the High Line at the Rail Yards

UNIQLO presents a special opportunity to explore the rail yards section of the High Line as part of the 10th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend.

Go on a self-guided walking tour of the High Line’s final section, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the past, present, and future of this iconic stretch of the elevated freight rail viaduct. Currently closed to visitors, the rail yards section extends one-half mile beyond the High Line park’s northern terminus, and wraps around a storage yard for Long Island Rail Road trains traveling to and from Penn Station. We’ve opened the rail yards to the public for openhousenewyork weekend in years past, and this year, UNIQLO has helped to extend this popular weekend of tours to two weekends and twice as many opportunities to explore.

With construction beginning on the rail yards section as early as the fall, this could be your final opportunity to see the site before it is transformed into an extension of the High Line park. Take advantage of this special opportunity to enjoy unparalleled views of the Hudson River and Midtown skyline and walk along the High Line’s original rail tracks, which are still overgrown with wildflowers and grasses that took root when the freight trains stopped running in the 1980s.

We’re grateful to UNIQLO for continuing to support the maintenance and operations of the High Line in the second year of their partnership with Friends of the High Line. In celebration of the partnership and the one year anniversary of the opening of their 5th Ave global flagship store, UNIQLO will be providing visitors to the Rail Yards Weekends with a gift from their innovative Heattech line. A limited number of these complimentary UNIQLO gift bags will be available for guests at the end of the tour.

Self-guided tours will take place every 30 minutes between 12:00 and 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 6; Sunday, October 7, Saturday, October 13; and Sunday, October 14. Tours are open to visitors 18 years of age or older.

The entry point for self-guided walking tours will be provided upon making a reservation.

Reservations for self-guided walking tours on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7 cost $5, and will be available through openhousenewyork beginning the morning of Thursday, September 27 at 10:00 AM. UPDATE: Self-guided tours for both Rail Yards Weekends are sold out.

Visitors interested in taking one of the self-guided tours are advised to mark their calendars; rail yards walking tours have been wildly popular in past years, and reservations have been filled in as little as one hour.
