Talk: Beyond the High Line: Transforming the Lowline
Talk: Beyond the High Line: Transforming the Lowline
Hear plans to turn an abandoned trolley tunnel in Manhattan into the world’s first underground park.
Currently a 1.5-acre disused trolley terminal, the unique space was built in 1903 to allow trolleys using the Williamsburg Bridge to turn around, and hasn’t been used since 1948. The Lower East Side is a neighborhood underserved by parkland, and plans for this space include developing a new technology using fiber optics to re-direct sunlight below ground.
Dan Barasch and James Ramsey, the Co-Founders of the Lowline, will give a presentation detailing the history of the space, its current status, and their vision to redevelop it as the world’s first underground park.
