Talk: Beyond the High Line: Transforming Chicago

The Bloomingdale Trail is a three mile-long elevated railway in the heart of Chicago. In a historical trajectory similar to the High Line’s, the railways were elevated to take trains off of busy city streets, but these railways fell out of use in the late 20th century. Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail formed to advocate for the railway’s transformation into a vibrant public space.

We are pleased to welcome Beth White from The Trust for Public Land and Ben Helphand from Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail for an introduction to the project. Beth and Ben will walk you through the history of the railway, current design concepts, the complexities of a public-private partnership, and the balance required to create a public space that will be a mixture of park and trail, and both a neighborhood park and a citywide destination.

Join us on July 23 for the next talk in our “Beyond the High Line” series: Transforming Detroit.

During our surveying of community members this past summer and fall, many teens expressed interest in summer film screenings. So this August, we’ve recruited local teens to curate a series of film screenings for the High Line.

Stay tuned for details and a full schedule.

EVERY WEDNESDAY: High Line Kids: Wild Wednesday

Watch a butterfly grow, touch a wriggly worm, or grab a magnifying glass and watch seeds fly at this weekly drop-in nature-based program. Each month focuses on a different natural wonder on the High Line, see below for more details.

June: Plant Parts
Children will be able to use magnifying glasses to get up-close-and-personal with some of the High Line’s plants. See the texture of a flower, watch as seeds fly, or examine the intricate veins on leaves. At the end of the month, join us for a Creature Feature with live bees!

July: Butterflies
Throughout the month of July, we’ll be raising our own brood of Painted Lady butterflies. During each Wild Wednesday session this month we’ll learn about the life cycle of butterflies and check-in on the development of our own. This month will culminate in a celebration and release of our butterflies.

Please note Wild Wednesdays will not take place on Wednesday, July 4.

August: Food Chain
Children will get an inside peek at the hidden ecosystem on the High Line. Find the sun trapped inside a plant’s leaf, hop like a grasshopper, or become a bird on the hunt for a meal on the High Line. At the end of the month, children can check out a wriggly worm turning old plant material into nutritious soil at our Creature Feature.

LOCATION
Chelsea Market Passage
On the High Line at West 16th Street

This High Line Program is free and open to kids ages four and up accompanied by caregivers. No RSVP required.
