Garden Zone

10th Avenue Square

Location

At 17th St.

Just beyond the Chelsea Market Passage, a grove of three-flowered maple trees frames a spectacular view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The planting beds just south of the 10th Avenue Square contain a mix of moor grasses, false indigo, foam flower, and an interesting combination of spring bulbs.

Featured Plants

Shooting star

Dodecatheon meadia

A spectacular display: observed from a distance, these flowers appear suspended in midair—an illusion of a shooting star falling from the sky.

Virginia rose

Rosa virginiana

Unlike hybridized roses that are plagued by pests and disease, this native species thrives as a showy hedge without chemical intervention.

Gro-low aromatic sumac

Rhus aromatica ‘Gro-low’

When crushed, the leaves and stems of this small shrub release oils with a sharp, spicy fragrance.

Mexican feather grass

Stipa tenuissima

This perennial grass grows in fluffy rounded globes, with wispy thin blades that have the soft texture of long silky hair.

Alice oakleaf hydrangea

Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Alice’

Large, profuse white blooms in summer are just the beginning; in fall, the foliage of this perennial turns brilliant shades of purple, red, and gold.
