Wood on the High Line

Wood on the High Line

We have recently gotten a few inquiries regarding the wood used for the High Line's benches and decking. The Ipe wood used on the High Line was chosen for its longevity and durability, and taken from a managed forest certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which is recognized for creating and enforcing the world's strongest standards for forest management. FSC membership requires conservation of biological diversity, water resouces, soils, and fragile ecosystems and landscapes to maintain the integrity of the forest and discourage exploitative deforestation.

The FSC works in cooperation with, and is endorsed by, several major environmental organizations. According to the Rainforest Alliance, the FSC "sets the global standard for responsible forestry." The World Wildlife Fund states that the FSC "offers the best way forward with respect to forest certification" and that "the logo of the FSC is currently the only credible label for good forest management." The Sierra Club calls it "the most credible and effective forest certification program in existence."
