On Wednesday, July 9, Friends of the High Line will host an exhibition preview of competition proposals and its third annual Summer Benefit, co-chaired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Caro and actor Edward Norton. The response to "Designing the High Line," our open, international ideas competition was tremendous. 720 people from 38 countries contributed their ideas, dreams, and visions for the High Line. The entries ranged from the highly practical to the purely visionary. The jury selected some of the most thought-provoking ideas. The winners, along with other interesting entries and a video about the High Line, will be on display in a large-scale exhibition at Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall from July 10-26.

In addition to collecting comments at the exhibition, Friends of the High Line will hold a series of open community workshops beginning in September, with a variety of the competition proposals serving as springboards for discussion. At the end of 2003, Friends of the High Line will incorporate the community’s comments into a Request for Proposals, which will lead to the development of realizable designs for the High Line's reuse as public open space.

Manhattan Community Board No. 4 has scheduled a public meeting at which Representatives from the New York City Department of City Planning will present a preliminary zoning proposal for the far West Chelsea/High Line area.

FHL is accepting late online and offline registrations for "Designing the High Line," our open, international ideas competition, through Friday, May 16. After May 16, the registration process will be formally closed. Paid registration is required for all competition entrants. Fees for individuals and teams is now $100.00 USD; for studios with up to 15 entries, $450.00 USD. Trespassing Warning: There has recently been an increase in illegal trespassing on the High Line. Many people have been issued tickets and summons — we have even heard reports of arrests. We urge you in the strongest terms not to trespass. FHL does not control access to the Line, which is private property, owned and managed by CSX Corporation. Accessing the Line without CSX permission is illegal. Unfortunately, we cannot offer tours to individuals, student groups, or those entering the design competition. Trespassing on the Line threatens FHL's working relationship with CSX, which in turn may threaten our long-term ability to open the Line to full and complete public access. Help us save the High Line and open it to the public: Don't trespass.

New Materials on Website: A selection of High Line photos has been added to the competition website for reference and use in design competition entries. Also, an inventory of existing plant life on the High Line, compiled by Scott D. Appell, a taxonomist from the Horticultural Society of New York, has been added. Jurors in the Press: Several of the world-renowned jurors of Designing the High Line have recently enjoyed prominent coverage in the press. Dia Art Foundation curator Lynne Cooke was featured April 6 in the New York Times Magazine article about the new Dia museum in Beacon, NY; go to http://www.nytimes.com/2003/04/06/magazine/06DIA.html. Architect Bernard Tschumi's new building for Florida International University was featured in the New York Times "Arts & Leisure" section, April 6; go to http://www.nytimes.com/2003/04/06/arts/design/06MUSC.html.
