This is your last week to see the "Designing the High Line", the exhibition of ideas for the High Line created in our open competition. It's a spectacular exhibition. No High Line supporter will want to miss it.

The exhibition was designed by Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano of LOT/EK Architecture. Exhibition graphics were designed by Paula Scher of Pentagram. The exhibition incorporates a wonderful video presentation produced and directed by John Zeiman, featuring narration by Edward Norton and Diane von Furstenberg.

Friends of the High Line will host a public forum in Fall 2003, open to residents and business-owners in the High Line area and the public at large. A variety of the proposals created in the "Designing the High Line" competition will serve as springboards for discussion. Friends of the High Line will incorporate public comments from the forum into guidelines included in a subsequent Request for Proposals (RFP). Issuance of the RFP will lead to the selection of a design team and the development of a realizable master plan.

On Wednesday, July 9, Friends of the High Line will host an exhibition preview of competition proposals and its third annual Summer Benefit, co-chaired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Caro and actor Edward Norton. Cocktail and exhibition preview tickets start at $125. Benefit dinner tickets start at $500.

The response to "Designing the High Line," our open, international ideas competition was tremendous. 720 people from 38 countries contributed their ideas, dreams, and visions for the High Line. The entries ranged from the highly practical to the purely visionary. The jury selected some of the most thought-provoking ideas. The winners, along with other interesting entries and a video about the High Line, will be on display in a large-scale exhibition at Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall from July 10-26.

In addition to collecting comments at the exhibition, Friends of the High Line will hold a series of open community workshops beginning in September, with a variety of the competition proposals serving as springboards for discussion. At the end of 2003, Friends of the High Line will incorporate the community’s comments into a Request for Proposals, which will lead to the development of realizable designs for the High Line's reuse as public open space.

Manhattan Community Board No. 4 has scheduled a public meeting at which Representatives from the New York City Department of City Planning will present a preliminary zoning proposal for the far West Chelsea/High Line area.

FHL is accepting late online and offline registrations for "Designing the High Line," our open, international ideas competition, through Friday, May 16. After May 16, the registration process will be formally closed. Paid registration is required for all competition entrants. Fees for individuals and teams is now $100.00 USD; for studios with up to 15 entries, $450.00 USD.
