We want to give a shout out to Brad Hassett, a High Line enthusiast from Australia. Brad recently brought to our attention that the High Line is featured in Issue 2 of Daredevil , the re-launch of the 1960s series by Marvel Comics.
For those unfamiliar with the comic book world, the character Daredevil, aka Matt Murdock, is a superhero living in the Hell’s Kitchen, a neighborhood just north of the High Line. In his youth, Murdock was blinded by a radioactive substance, and the radioactive exposure amplified his senses beyond normal human ability. His father supports him as he grows up, and is later killed by gangsters. As a lawyer by day and vigilante by night, Murdock transforms himself into the superhero Daredevil to seek out revenge against his father's killers, and later protects his neighborhood against various hooligans and evildoers.
Writer Mark Waid has teamed up with artists Paolo Rivera and Marcos Martín to re-launch the series, with Daredevil donning his signature dark red costume and mask. In Issue 2, released on August 17, readers find Daredevil lurking below the High Line, eavesdropping on a conversation between two men strolling through the park.
We are not sure if any other comic superheroes or villains have visited the High Line. As far as we know, Daredevil is the first. We were pleased to see the superhero’s creative use of the High Line’s historic steel columns as a perch and lookout, as well as the park’s signature “peel-up” benches depicted with great detail and accuracy. We hope Daredevil comes back again very soon.
You can pick up your own copy of Daredevil at your local comic book store, or at Midtown Comics , located at 200 West 40th Street in Times Square.
