On November 12 and 14, visitors gathered to watch dancers in brightly colored costumes jump, run, kick, and cartwheel along the High Line as part of Half-Mythical, Half-Legendary Americanism, a new dance-theater work by Tyler Ashley and the SARAHS.
Presented by Performa 11 , Friends of the High Line, and the Times Square Alliance , the performance explored the world of 18th century mass sports demonstrations and 1920s Russian Constructivism through the lens of a Jane Fonda workout video.
The dancers began the performance in the Chelsea Market Passage, and then proceeded south on the High Line, splashing through the water feature on the Diller – von Furstenberg Sundeck and racing down the planked walkway with forceful strides, kicks, and cartwheels, all while leading the growing crowd toward The Standard, New York. The event culminated with audience participation where kids and adults alike joined in and danced alongside the performers.
