This week, the US Art Critics Association [2] (AICA-USA) announced its annual awards recognizing artists, curators, museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions for their work in the past year.

Topping the list in the category of “Best Project in a Public Space” was Sarah Sze for her High Line Art installation, Still Life with Landscape (Model for a Habitat) [3].

Emerging from the shooting perspective lines of the landscape of the High Line, the sculpture extends through space like a perspective drawing in three dimensions. The artwork is simultaneously an observatory, an experiment, and a metropolis, evoking urban construction, scientific models, and attempts to capture nature in situ.

Sarah Sze’s sculpture, Still Life with Landscape (Model for a Habitat), is a favorite with visitors and migrating songbirds. High Line staff fill the sculpture with bird seed, fruit, and other foods to attract birds, and butterflies and other beneficial insects.

A temporary installation originally commissioned in 2011 by our then curator Lauren Ross, the piece will be on view until June of this year.
