On Tuesday, Mayor Bloomberg visited the High Line to commemorate the naming of one of the park’s best-loved design features. The newly dedicated Tiffany & Co. Foundation Overlook, at the southern end of the High Line, forms a glass-walled balcony over the city streets below. The cut of the structure, created when a portion of the High Line was demolished in 1991, allows visitors to see the High Line’s structural framework and views of Greenwich Village, the Meatpacking District, and the Hudson River.
The Mayor was joined by Michael J. Kowalski, Chairman and CEO of Tiffany & Co.; Fernanda M. Kellogg, Chair of The Tiffany & Co. Foundation; and Anisa Kamadoli Costa, President of the Foundation, along with Friends of the High Line Co-Founders Joshua David and Robert Hammond.
We are honored to be able to recognize The Tiffany & Co. Foundation for its visionary commitment to the High Line. The Tiffany & Co. Foundation has been a leader in efforts to transform the historic High Line structure into a public park, through its urban parks program. In 2011, The Tiffany & Co. Foundation helped launch our campaign to raise funds for the construction of the High Line at the rail yards with its Rail Yards Challenge Grant, a $5 million challenge gift that has inspired private giving far beyond the challenge itself and paved the way for the many successes we’ve had in our efforts to save the High Line at the rail yards.
The Tiffany & Co. Foundation was also a leader in our campaign to raise funds for the construction of Sections 1 and 2 of the High Line, making a gift in 2007 to support the construction of the Chelsea Grasslands, between West 18th and West 20th Streets. Our friends at The Tiffany & Co. Foundation are exemplary leaders among our many partners and supporters: in addition to funding capital construction and endowment of the park, they are dedicated supporters of the park’s annual operations fund, recognizing the importance of maintaining the High Line at a level of excellence commensurate with its innovative design.
We are deeply grateful to The Tiffany & Co. Foundation for its leadership and its support.
