Mark your calendars!
The High Line’s final section at the rail yards is currently closed to visitors, but we will be opening the gates for you to explore the site during the first two weekends in October. It’s part of the 10th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend, and this year, thanks to UNIQLO, there will be two weekends of tours, and twice as many opportunities to explore the High Line at the rail yards.
Follow us after the jump to get details.
Since 2003, we’ve been organizing walking tours for openhousenewyork to give supporters an insider’s look at the High Line. In recent years, tours have taken place at the rail yards over the course of one weekend. This year, UNIQLO has helped to extend this popular walking tour to two weekends and twice as many opportunities to explore the High Line at the rail yards.
Join us to get a behind-the-scenes look at the past, present, and future of this iconic stretch of the elevated railway. You’ll be able to take in unparalleled views of the Hudson River and Midtown skyline and walk along the High Line’s original rail tracks, which are still overgrown with wildflowers and grasses that took root when the freight trains stopped running in the 1980s.
The site also offers a glimpse at the self-seeded landscape that inspired the design of the High Line park, and with construction beginning on the rail yards section as early as the fall, this could be your final opportunity to see the site before it is transformed. Earlier this year, the City of New York acquired the site , and we are now working with the High Line Design Team to finalize the plans to open the rail yards to the public.
We’re grateful to UNIQLO for continuing to support the maintenance and operations of the High Line in the second year of their partnership with Friends of the High Line.
At the end of the self-guided tour of the site, UNIQLO will be offering tour guests a limited number of gift bags featuring Heattech products, their line of heat-generating innerwear, in celebration of our partnership and the one year anniversary of the opening of their 5th Avenue global flagship store in New York City.
Reservations for the first weekend cost $5, and will be available through www.ohny.org beginning on Thursday, September 27 at 10:00 AM. Self-guided tours during the second weekend are free, but reservations are required, and can be made through our web event calendar beginning at 12:00 noon on Thursday, September 27. UPDATE: Self-guided tours for both Rail Yards Weekends are sold out. The self-guided tours during Rail Yards Weekends are open to visitors 18 years of age and older.
Make sure to reserve early. In past years reservations have been filled in less than one hour!
