As you can see in this video by Arbuckle Industries, the third and final section of the High Line at the Rail Yards is currently overgrown with self-seeded wildflowers and grasses that grew up between the tracks when the trains stopped running on the elevated railway in the 1980s.
Our goal has always been to open this final section of the elevated railway as public open space, and last week we held a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the beginning of construction. Before the work officially begins next month, we’re opening the gates for you to explore the rail yards section during the first two weekends in October. Presented by Uniqlo as part of the 10th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend, the self-guided walking tours during Rail Yards Weekends will be your last chance to walk along the High Line at the Rail Yards before it is transformed into an extension of the High Line park.
Registration opens tomorrow. Follow us after the jump to get registration details.
Tomorrow we begin taking reservations for self-guided walking tours during Rail Yards Weekends, which are being presented by Uniqlo during the first two weekends in October.
Make sure to reserve your spot as soon as reservations open tomorrow. In past years reservations have been filled in less than one hour!
Reservations for self-guided tours on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7 cost $5, and will be available through www.ohny.org beginning at 10:00 AM.
Self-guided tours on Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14 are free, but reservations are required,
and can be made through our web event calendar beginning at 12:00 PM. UPDATE: Self-guided tours for the second weekend are sold out.
We’ve opened the rail yards to the public for openhousenewyork weekend in years past, and this year, Uniqlo has helped to extend this popular weekend of tours to two weekends and twice as many opportunities to explore.
We’re grateful to Uniqlo for continuing to support the maintenance and operations of the High Line in the second year of their partnership with Friends of the High Line. In celebration of the partnership and the one year anniversary of the opening of their 5th Avenue global flagship store, Uniqlo will be providing Rail Yards Weekends visitors with a gift from their Heattech line.
We hope you will join us during Rail Yards Weekends to see the self–seeded landscape that inspired our community to join together to save this historic structure and transform it into one of the city's best-loved public places.
UNIQLO is the Presenting Sponsor of the Rail Yards Weekends in October. Rail yards programs are generously supported by the New York Community Trust—LuEsther T. Mertz Advised Fund and Greenacre Foundation.
