NYC is made up of many neighborhoods that reflect different cultures, dreams, and stories. In June we will map and explore the communities that make up the Big Apple through art, movement, storytelling, and hands-on exploration for the whole family.

Join us to celebrate Pride with Drag Queen Story Hour! The performer will read stories about neighborhoods and traveling around the city, and we’ll have a dance party at the end!

Movement Workshop

Dance with the environment, and you are part of it! Move with Parcon Resilience and D A N C I T E C T U R E to safely explore cityscape and energy through guided group experiences and consensual movement practice. Parcon Resilience is a method for embodying social justice through a movement vocabulary inspired from Parkour (Urban obstacle course running) and Contact Improvisation (a duet form based on dialoging through weight sharing.) D A N C I T E C T U R E invites exploration of spatial and emotional atmospheres through mindful movement with an art installation.

ArchForKids Art Making
Art making is appropriate for families of all ages and abilities. Children with special needs are encouraged to come make art with us.

Go through time to explore New York City through its buildings and structures with ArchForKids. Explore an illustrated timeline of notable structures and events from First Nations to present day. Learn architectural elements and building styles by re-creatings facades of NYC buildings as a family.

Each month, artists from Superhero Clubhouse will create an installation to transform our space based on our monthly theme. Look for surprises on every corner — they pop up for one day only!

Learn about plants from a High Line Gardener! Each month we will have a new, hands-on activity based on our theme. Families will also be able to observe and touch our worms!

All children must be attended by a caregiver at all times.

About the Artists:
Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is just what it sounds like — drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. By participating in a space where “dress-up” is real, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and to imagine a world where people can present as they wish.

Superhero Clubhouse unites ecology and theater to enact justice, inspire hope, and activate a thriving future. This New York-based community of artists, scientists, and environmental professionals is invested in a long-term experiment to understand how theater can help shift consciousness in the face of global crises.

ArchForKids provides young people with dynamic, hands-on, minds-on learning experiences grounded in architecture, design, engineering, and urban planning. Young designers brainstorm, sketch, estimate, design, calculate, and construct. They create parks and dream houses, go on “I Spy” architecture walks, build model skyscrapers and bridges, and so much more, while applying academic concepts to real-world situations. In addition, young people gain a deeper understanding — and appreciation — of their own communities and the wider world.

Parcon NYC is an inclusive, cooperative movement practice. It challenges conformity to pedestrian movement through expression, primarily inspired by Parkour and Contact Improvisation. Parkour is a form of urban obstacle course running that prioritizes efficiency and the conquering of self-determined challenges. Contact Improvisation is a duet dance form where two or more people share weight and momentum on a dance floor through any part of their body. In Parcon, movers cooperate to share weight in interdependent relationships with objects, assistive devices, each other, and the environment.
