Virginia bluebells

Mertensia virginica

Virginia bluebells are named for their bell-shaped flowers, which begin nearly fuchsia before deepening to a blue that is rarely seen in wild plant species. These spring ephemerals emerge, bloom, produce seed, and disappear all within a matter of weeks.

Where to see this plant:

Mertensia virginica or Virginia bluebells can be found in the Gansevoort Woodlands, on the High Line near Gansevoort Street. This spring ephemeral blooms between April and May to take advantage of the abundant sunlight before the tree canopy leafs out.
