Carolina Caycedo

Corazón de Oro / Heart of Gold

Carolina Caycedo (b. 1972, London, England; lives in Los Angeles, California)

Reflecting on issues of value, extraction, and technology, Caycedo’s Corazón de Oro / Heart of Gold is a nearly 15-foot-tall gold nugget made of painted bronze sitting on a circular blue pedestal that evokes the sky and the sea. Gold is a sacred material in many cultures, but recently it has lost its ritual value due to its use in jewelry and electronic manufacturing, which are triggering the environmental consequences of extreme mining.
