Jamal Cyrus (b. 1973, Houston, Texas; lives in Houston, Texas)
Blue Sky for Sun House is a configuration of segments of railroad tracks with a base of oyster shell concrete. In Texas, freight trains were present throughout Cyrus’s childhood and have an important function in the Blues tradition as a signifier of freedom, as a metronome, and as a link between this world and the next. The artist has used oyster shell concrete in his work as a way to consider the links between Black life and the ocean.
