Jeffrey Gibson

Weight of the World

Jeffrey Gibson (b. 1972, Colorado Springs, Colorado; lives in Germantown, New York)

Weight of the World is a cast bronze sculpture composed of images from the artist’s collection of tchotchkes and decorative objects: representations of Native people created by non-Native and Native people. The work references a marble sculpture called Indian Vase, carved in 1876 by American artist Ames Van Wart that depicts two warriors and a buffalo hunt, currently on view in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
