Kerry Tribe is a filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Tribe works primarily in moving images and installation, focusing on the mechanics and technologies of representation. With previous works dedicated to aphasia (a loss of capacity for language) and amnesia, Tribe is also interested in the different ways that we come to know the world and share our unique experiences of it with others.

Exquisite Corpse (2016) is a 51-minute film that follows the Los Angeles River for its 51-mile length from the San Fernando Valley to the Pacific Ocean. The work chronicles the river’s neighbors—animal, human, and vegetal—and their stories with one minute devoted to each mile. Alternating close portraits of individuals with sweeping aerial views, Tribe’s video provides a beautiful image of the iconic river at this moment in time—one when its future development is imminent.

Artist bio

Kerry Tribe (b. 1973, Boston, Massachusetts) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Recent solo exhibitions of her work have been presented at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, California (2017); 356 Mission, Los Angeles, California (2015); The Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia (2014); The Power Plant, Toronto, Canada (2012); Camden Arts Centre, London, United Kingdom (2011); and Modern Art Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom (2011). Tribe’s work has been included in significant group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York (2013); the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, California (2011); the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, New York (2010, 2006); and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (2008). The recipient of a Herb Alpert Award, a Creative Capital Grant, and a USA Artists Award, Tribe’s work is in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, New York; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, California; and the Generali Foundation, Vienna, Austria; among others.
