Manuela Ribadeneira

Drawing of a Thing Unknown

Manuela Ribadeneira (b. 1966, Quito, Ecuador; lives in London, England)

Drawing of a Thing Unknown is a metal and aluminum pop-up image of the first known European illustration of a pineapple, made by Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés in 1535 when he arrived in Guadeloupe. QR codes play readings of Oviedo’s original accompanying text. This sculpture evokes the colonial history associated with this fruit.
