Bettina | Yto Barrada

One Constant

Yto Barrada (b. 1971, Paris, France; lives in Tangier, Morocco and New York, New York)
Bettina Grossman (b. 1927, Brooklyn, New York; d. 2021, New York, New York)

The proposed work in metal or wood is an unrealized project by the artist known as Bettina, who was born in New York in 1927 and lived most of her life at the Chelsea Hotel. Barrada became responsible for Bettina’s estate upon the artist’s passing in 2021. This large-scale sculpture was conceived by Bettina in 1972–73, when the artist designed and fabricated a series of wooden models by precision-cutting flat, round discs into fan-like or wave-shaped three-dimensional sculptures to be realized later at monumental scale.
