Alan van Capelle to join as Executive Director

August 9, 2022

Announcement from Mario J. Palumbo, Jr., Chair; and Susan Viniar, Vice-Chair and Search Committee Chair:

Last fall, we embarked on a national search to find a new Executive Director. This is a pivotal moment for the High Line, as we transition from our initial construction and expansion to a deeper focus on our role as a dynamic public park and cultural institution.

Today, we can announce we have selected Alan van Capelle to serve as our next Executive Director. In Alan, we have found someone with the experience, relationships, and passion to lead us into the next stage of our growth. He’ll officially join our team this coming January.

Many of you already know Alan as a dedicated advocate, community organizer, and civic leader.

Currently President and CEO of Educational Alliance, Alan has led an important network of Manhattan community centers that offer economically-integrated, multi-generational programs that bring diverse neighborhoods together.

As one of the architects behind passing Marriage Equality in New York State and as an organizer for health care and building service workers, Alan has shown an ability to bring people together in remarkable ways.

As we complete the Moynihan Connector—our most recent expansion project—we see a bright future for the High Line as not only a green space, but as an institution that brings social, cultural, and economic benefits to its communities. Alan will bring his unique strengths in community building so that the High Line continues playing a greater positive role in the lives of those in its surrounding neighborhoods.

Most importantly, Alan loves and cherishes the High Line as much as we do! He is committed to keeping it a beautifully maintained green space and venue for important public art, free and open to all. And he shares our foundational vision for the High Line as a model for industrial reuse projects across the country and world.

We also want to take this moment to express our deepest gratitude to Joshua David, our Co-Founder and Interim Executive Director, for his continued leadership. Since stepping in to see us through this transition, he has made the High Line a better place to visit and a better place to work. His hard work has made us a more inclusive, diverse, and welcoming public space.

Please, join us in thanking Joshua and in welcoming Alan as we begin this next exciting chapter for the High Line!
