It’s a Tree! invites you to celebrate this holiday season with an unconventional twist on a traditional festivity—a tree lighting in the style of a gender reveal. Conceived by artist-designer Michael Angelo, our neighbor and the owner of Wonderland Beauty Parlor, the colored light installation bathes one of the High Line’s majestic Ilex opaca ‘Dan Fenton’ holly trees in hues of pink, blue, and the full spectrum in between. The installation is a reminder of our common ground and the themes of love and unity that thread through multiple holidays. Michael is inspired by the work of the Ali Forney Center, the nation’s largest nonprofit providing shelter and healthcare services to LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness.
As you experience the installation and are bathed in the shifting spectrum of colored light, Michael encourages you to share images on social media with the hashtag #Itsatree.
Major support for High Line Community Engagement Programs is provided by Denise Littlefield Sobel and by Sarah Min and Matt Pincus.
