Volunteers

Throughout our history, dedicated volunteers have helped make the High Line a success. We couldn’t keep this public space thriving without the neighbors and New Yorkers who share their time, expertise, feedback, talent, and energy.

Throughout our history, dedicated volunteers have helped make the High Line a success. We couldn’t keep this public space thriving without the neighbors and New Yorkers who share their time, expertise, feedback, talent, and energy.

Who?

Our volunteer program is a welcoming, open community of people who share a passion for public space, civic engagement, horticulture, history, and environmental sustainability. They are people from all walks of life, who deeply care for the High Lineand NYC alike.

What?

Volunteers contribute to their community while making a difference on and off the park through their support at High Line programs and in the surrounding community. They gain friendships, professional development, real-life experience, and opportunities to build a deeper connection with nature and with their neighbors. They also engage with our organization and staff in ways you couldn’t otherwise.

We have a wide variety of opportunities to learn, grow, and experience the city through a unique lens while volunteering with the High Line.

How?

Our volunteer application is open through April 12, 2024.

Docents

Docents lead High Line visitors on interactive walking tours of the park. They work with our staff to research and develop a walking tour that aligns with the High Line’s mission and their personal interests and engage park visitors in conversation about history, art, horticulture, architecture, and more.

Greeters

Greeters interact with High Line visitors from an information cart in the park. They play a critical role in representing the nonprofit organization, illuminating our mission and work, and encouraging people to support the organization through donations or membership.

Ambassadors

Ambassadors support High Line programs by engaging with event attendees, providing information on upcoming High Line programs, and supporting wayfinding and check-in at on-site events. Ambassadors can also support the High Line’s participation at community events.

Horticulture Partners

Horticulture Partners are paired with our horticulturists to help with watering, weeding, pruning, cleaning up plant beds, and other necessary gardening tasks. This role is available on weekday mornings from April to October to match the Horticulture department’s work schedule.

'' Volunteering at the High Line allows me to interact with people from all over the city—and all over the world—in a place that makes everyone smile when they arrive.'
