In the High Line Teens program I have found friends, and I have found mentors who taught me to never apologize for taking space, to do what feels right for me, and to pursue my dreams. They have taught me more about loving the skin that I am in, and never letting anyone talk to me like I am lesser than.
Some of what I have enjoyed about the Brooklyn Bridge Manhattan summer residency is the networking and privilege to interact with local powers and politicians. As a future politician and concerned community member, I try my best to educate myself about government. It is very important to me to be aware of such things, since it gives me a better idea about our political climate and what people are doing to help fight injustice. This residency has given me the opportunities to network and meet with politicians, such as Manhattan Borough president Mark D. Levine. It is not the politics that makes the residency inherently interesting, but the agency that I and fellow staff are given to reach out to local powers, and take a few steps towards change.
