High Line at the Rail Yards Opening

On Saturday, September 20 – in celebration of the official opening of the High Line at the Rail Yard’s – Friends of the High Line gathered more than 500 of our neighbors, community partners, supporters, members, volunteers, and elected officials to participate in a procession along the length of the High Line.

Marchers carried processional objects inspired in the history of the communities around the High Line. With the help of artists from the Processional Arts Workshop, hundreds of neighbors and community members help build the over 170 objects that made the procession festive.

The event culminated with a communal meal where procession participants sat elbow-to-elbow and enjoyed a picnic at the foot the Rail Yards near West 34th Street. This community celebration kicked off a week of free programs that allowed visitors to take advantage of the multiple possibilities that different spaces at the High Line have to offer.
