My High Line: Neftaly Garcia

The High Line means many things to many people. It’s a place for quiet contemplation; a place to enjoy nature in a dense, urban environment; a place to hang out with friends; a place to find inspiration; and a place to get involved in the community at large. My High Line celebrates the individuals who bring enthusiasm, knowledge, and creativity to park life on the High Line.

The series continues with Neftaly Garcia, a dynamic college sophomore who has had years of experience with the High Line. Her first introduction to the park was in 2008 — prior to the High Line’s opening — when her LAB School class did a project with a local artist. After she began high school, Neftaly returned to assist with children’s programs, first in our Youth Corps, and then as a dedicated Play Leader. She’s been with our High Line Kids programs ever since.

In her current role as a High Line Education Assistant, Neftaly can be found teaching kids about pollination, leading creative building projects with the Workyard Kit, or preparing for Play with Your Food sessions — always with a beaming smile. This year, she has worked with the High Line Teen Arts Council to produce the first High Line Teen Nights, and will be working with local schools to create the Ghost Train for next month’s Haunted High Line Halloween.
