A Walk Through Time is a new, commissioned work by Kamau Ware that features the personal narratives of seven New Yorkers whose routines around 7 o’clock are chronicled through portraits and oral histories that will be shared during a walking tour along the High Line. The seven subjects represent a range of intersecting identities found in New York City, including ethnicity, culture, physical ability, and sexual orientation, among others.

Ware is best known for his storytelling project Black Gotham Experience, which celebrates the impact of the African Diaspora on New York City through walking tours, photography-based graphic novels, and signature events.

About A Walk Through Time
A Walk Through Time was created to complement The Mile-Long Opera, a citywide engagement project co-created by architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, with words and lyrics by acclaimed poets Anne Carson and Claudia Rankine. The Mile-Long Opera is a biography of 7 o’clock, an ambitious, collective, free choral work that shares personal stories from hundreds of New Yorkers about life in our rapidly changing city that will take place October 3–7.

About the Artist
Kamau Ware is a multidimensional creative blending complementary yet disparate disciplines as an Artist / Historian. He is best known for his flagship storytelling project, Black Gotham Experience (BGX), a visual storytelling project founded in 2010 that celebrates the impact of the African Diaspora on New York City through a series of walking tours, graphic novels, and walking tours. Kamau’s Black Gotham Experience has been recognized by The Atlantic and The New York Times, Columbia University’s History in Action Project Award and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Ware has also received prominent commissions, including a public art display in New York City’s Financial District (2017) and the first Black history tour of New York City Hall commissioned by New York Public Design Commission (2018). Recent engagements include the American Association for State and Local History Annual Meeting in Austin, TX (2017), the New Museum’s IdeasCity (2017), the Annual Max J Bond Jr. Lecture in New York, NY (2017), and SXSWedu & SXSW Interactive in Austin, Texas (2018). This fall 2018, Kamau will be a visiting professor for the New School co-teaching a course titled “Blind Spots: New York’s Black Past”.
